In recent months, dozens of citizens in Nanjing have suffered from rhabdomyolysis after eating crayfish. The number of cases with complete hospital records published by the government has reached 19 cases, causing widespread public concern. The reporter learned yesterday that the Ministry of Health has sent relevant experts to investigate in Nanjing.

Ministry of Health spokesman Deng Haihua told reporters that the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention had dispatched experts in food safety and inspection to Nanjing. He said that the investigation of the matter was mainly related to the local authorities, and experts from the Ministry of Health mainly gave technical support.

Locking the cause is the bottleneck

The day before yesterday afternoon, experts held a seminar in the Occupational Health and Poison Control Center of the China CDC. According to experts attending the meeting and Professor Hao Fengtong of the Occupational Disease and Poisoning Division of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Capital Medical University, the difficulty of the current investigation is that no direct cause of rhabdomyolysis has been found.

It is reported that rhabdomyolysis refers to the acute destruction and dissolution of skeletal muscle, which releases a large number of myoglobin contents such as myoglobin and phosphokinase, and enters a group of clinical syndromes in peripheral blood. Its rated hazard is that myoglobin released into the blood can easily block the renal tubules and cause acute renal failure. Mainly as a sudden muscle pain, muscle weakness, urine was soy sauce.

Hao Fengtong said that there are many causes of rhabdomyolysis. As far as physical factors are concerned, any process that overloads skeletal muscle may cause illness; in terms of chemical factors, it may cause carbon monoxide poisoning, organophosphorus pesticide poisoning, poisonous mushroom poisoning, and poisonous snake bites. Disease drugs involve at least six major categories and hundreds of species. In the absence of other clues, one by one test screening is no different from a needle in a haystack.

Suspected of antibiotic contamination

Hao Fengtong said that rhabdomyolysis is a rare clinical disease.

Rhabdomyolysis occurs after eating crayfish in Nanjing for a short period of time. It is highly likely that crayfish is a carrier of pathogenic factors. In addition, there have been several cases of rhabdomyolysis after eating crayfish in Fuzhou and other places.

Hao Fengtong said that the cause of the crawfish disease is most likely to occur in the farming sector. He wrote in his blog: “The possibility of contamination with veterinary polyester antibiotics must first be eliminated. Veterinary polyether ester antibiotics are commonly used in the treatment of poultry against coccidiosis, and the main manifestations of toxicity are rhabdomyolysis. Crayfish can adapt to a variety of water environments and have a wide range of food intake. Once veterinary polyether ester antibiotics are contaminated in their living space, it may cause the disease to occur.”
