Asian manufacturers are attacking high-priced machine tools. At the machine tool exhibition "IMTS2010" (session: September 13-18, 2010, venue: McCormick Place) held in Chicago, there was an "incident" that subverted the "common sense" of the global machine tool industry. The general view of the machine tool industry before this is that Asian manufacturers use cheap weapons as their weapon, and they have continuously expanded their share of the low price of popularity through puerile. However, the Asian manufacturers have exhibited high-priced machines with a price of "110 million yen." This is the 5-axis control gate machining center (MC) "DCV4035B-5AX" developed by Yeong Chin Machinery Industries of Taiwan.

The size of the table is 4100×2400mm, and it can load 20t machining workpieces. The spindle has a maximum output of 46 kW and a maximum speed of 10,000 rpm. Use a spindle unit with a B-axis rotation function (rotation angle of ±110°) and a C-axis rotation function (rotation angle of 360°). It is a machine type that can easily cut large workpieces with complex shapes. The company mainly sells large parts such as aircraft wing components and solar energy systems, as well as automotive shock absorber molds.

Although it is a high-priced large-scale machine tool, it is not surprising if it is just a prototype machine. However, the gated MC of Yongjin Machinery Industry will not be shipped back to Taiwan after the closing of IMTS2010. The repeatability of the positioning accuracy is ±7μm (employees of Yongjin Machinery Industry). How long this precision can be maintained and the durability of the quality are still unknown. It is generally believed that the true value of a machine tool cannot be known without going through years of inspection. Previously, sales agents had negative comments on Taiwanese manufacturers such as “considerable after-sales maintenance”.

In this context, the above-mentioned 100 million yen is only a "pricing", in fact, Yongjin machinery industry should accept the buyer's discount requirements. Even if it is a portal MC that is dominated by a Japanese manufacturer whose advantage is high reliability, its price is only about “100 million yen” (a certain Japanese machine tool manufacturer). If the price is the same, Yongjin Machinery Industry may not be able to win. The discount is estimated to be at least 30%. But even if it is true, the price is 70 million yen, which is still a high-priced product.

In any case, in the IMTS2010, Yongjin Machinery Industry has achieved sales of high-priced products. In the future, Asian manufacturers will launch offensives in the high-priced areas and may become an opportunity for “price disruption” in the high-priced machine tools sector.
