Microsoft Develops "Predictive" Technology: Predict User Behavior with Sensors

According to the Daily Mail, Microsoft has been left behind in the smartphone war, but it is catching up. Microsoft is developing the ultimate "predictive" handset: its smartphones will become more intelligent and can even predict the owner's next move. At the 2016 HCI Conference in San Jose, California, USA, Microsoft demonstrated its "pre-touch" technology for mobile devices. Before the owner touches the phone, the phone knows what they want to do.

For example, this handset can detect the proximity of a finger to the screen and predict that the owner wants to control the video playback function. In addition, it can detect how the user grasps the device and adjusts the display control in advance so that the user can use it.

In the video released by Microsoft Research's official microblog, Microsoft introduced the principle of how the sensors around the screen of a cell phone find the user's finger movements in three dimensions. These sensors also help the phone determine how the user will hold it. By analyzing gestures and finger-proximity gestures, the handset can provide an easy-to-use location with relevant content options. For example, if the phone is held in one hand, it shows a dial for easy thumb control. When the phone is held by the other hand, the control system will also be transferred to the other side, so that users more convenient.

In addition, the grip sensor also helps to lock the orientation of the device, preventing the phone from changing as the user stays lying or changing gestures while watching a movie or reading a book. Ken Hinckley, a lead researcher at Microsoft, said the technology could change the way humans and devices interact. Hinkley said: "It uses the human hand as a window of thought, and I think it has great potential for mobile interaction."

Microsoft calls the technology a "predictive touchscreen," because before a user touches a device, it can predict how the user will interact with the device. For example, a user may be watching a video and when their finger approaches the screen, the device is predicted in advance and the control component is displayed. If they hold the device with one hand, the phone's control panel displays thumb controls that are easy to use, such as dialing instead of sliders.

Microsoft said the technology turns the touch screen into a more expressive and entertaining way to interact with mobile devices. However, Microsoft said the exploration of pre-touch technology shows that the revolution in the field of mobile touch is still in its infancy, and the infinite possibilities of touch screens are yet to be explored. Microsoft has developed 3D touch technology for Windows mobile phones, but then it can not. However, Microsoft technology developed gesture recognition technology for Kinect game consoles, and it is unclear whether it will be put on the market.

Microsoft said pre-touch technology has created new ways for people to interact with mobile devices, including hyperlinks that appear when pages are hovered over by fingers. Microsoft said that this may provide "a calm web browsing experience." When you find multiple fingers hovering over the screen, the phone also offers multi-touch options, such as swiping with two fingers to change web browsing tabs. Microsoft said the technology could eventually make it easier to send text messages, or even change the way people play games on mobile devices.
