Fiber test phase common problems

As an important transmission medium for integrated cabling projects, the performance of optical fiber is of particular importance. Optical fiber cables, for example, are laid over overhead or underground pipelines. Therefore, before laying the fiber, we have to test the fiber and fiber equipment. What problems do we encounter during the test?

1, fiber test, why use a dedicated reference jumper to set the reference value?

The test results are accurate or not, and the reference value settings are inextricably linked. If the reference is set incorrectly, the test result will be inaccurate or negative. The recommended method is to use reference jumpers and adapters when setting reference values.

In the TIA / EIA 568-B.3 and ISO 11801 standards, a fiber coupling loss requirement of less than 0.75dB. Most manufacturers produce fiber jumpers and adapters that meet or exceed this requirement. However, what many do not realize is that standards have special requirements for reference jumpers and adapters. IEC 14763-3 standard stipulates that the reference jumper and adapter in use, multimode fiber coupling loss of less than 0.1dB, single-mode fiber is less than 0.2dB. Conventional fiber jumpers simply can not meet this requirement. Therefore, it is recommended to manufacturers and test equipment manufacturers to buy a special reference jumper to be tested.

Setting reference values requires a fiber optic adapter with a zirconia ceramic sleeve material for optimal coupling. It is a common practice to use single-mode fiber adapters to set reference values for best multi-mode or single-mode fiber links.

2, when doing fiber link loss test, the importance of the tester boot warm up?

Under normal circumstances, the higher the temperature of the light source module, the greater the light source power it emits. During the test, the light source module takes some time to warm up before it can stabilize the transmitted light source power. If the reference value is set before the light source module is warmed up, as the temperature of the light source module rises, the test result will have a gain, which will affect the accuracy of the test result.

For example, when initially setting a reference value, the optical power meter receives and stores a power value of -6.00 dB. At this time, maintaining the reference setting model, without adding the link under test directly test, you should get 0.00dB test results. However, the optical power module after preheating, the power will be increased, the power meter receives the power value may rise to -6.20dB. At this time again test, will get -0.2dB gain.

The warm-up time of the light source module is related to the temperature of the test environment. It is very simple to test the stability of the light source module. As long as the reference value setting is completed, the reference value model is tested and the test value is acceptable between -0.04 dB and 0.04 dB. If it exceeds this value Value, you need to wait for a while, reset the reference value.

3, test loss, why there will be negative? Is the link not only tested without loss, but also produced a gain?

When testing a single-mode fiber link, if the length of the link under test is less than 100 m and the entire link is pigtailed, the total link loss may be only 0.15 dB. In this case, the light source module warm-up time is not enough, the test environment temperature changes, the reference jumper and test instrument coupling effect, the reference value is not set accurately enough and so may make the test results are negative, such as -0.03dB. At this time, the machine needs to be fully warmed up and the reference value reset.
