COSCO Shipyard LNG dual fuel bulk carrier has caused widespread concern

COSCO Shipyard’s successful LNG dual-fuel bulk carrier “CLEAN SKY” at the end of 2012 has attracted widespread attention from ship owners and equipment manufacturers at home and abroad. Recently, many European and American ship owners and equipment manufacturers have sent invitations to COSCO Shipyard. Or issue a consultation and look forward to cooperating on the LNG dual fuel ship project. The shipbuilding project based on the LNG dual fuel solution is also in the midst of an intensive negotiation.
"CLEAN SKY" is the world's first KAMSARMAX bulk carrier that can use LNG as fuel. It is a green and environmentally-friendly ship based on the increasingly strict requirements of the global maritime industry for the emission of harmful substances and the shipowners' strong desire for energy-saving ships. COSCO Shipyard and Lloyd's Register of Shipping (LR), the Greek shipowner gooden union jointly developed and promoted with LNG as fuel, with independent intellectual property rights, meeting the latest international norms, and EEDI indicators have reached international advanced level in energy conservation, environmental protection and economy. Level. The successful development of the project has filled the technical gap of COSCO Shipyard's dual-fuel propulsion bulk carrier and reached the domestic leading level, effectively improving the technical research and development capabilities of COSCO Shipyard's green ship products.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a clean and efficient ship fuel. At the technical level, not only new ships can use LNG, but also on-board ships can be modified to use LNG or LNG/diesel dual fuel. The industry predicts that by 2015, orders for new LNG-fueled vessels will reach 500, and by 2020 it will reach several thousand. New ship orders with LNG fuel or dual fuel will continue to emerge, guiding the shipping industry to achieve green environmental protection. It is understood that the use of LNG fuel can reduce 10% to 20% of CO2 emissions, 90% of NOx emissions, 100% of sulfide and particulate matter emissions.
According to Zhao Zhijian, general manager of COSCO Shipyard Technology Center, “CLEAN SKY” uses dual-fuel low-speed two-stroke diesel engines, dual-fuel medium-speed four-stroke generators and dual-fuel boilers. The comprehensive arrangement of the LNG gas storage tank is smart and safe, the pipeline system has a dedicated passage, which is safe and reasonable, and the power configuration of the dual fuel engine has been carefully considered. The LNG fuel system is configured to meet the requirements of IMO, IGC, IGF and other relevant norms and does not affect the overall performance of the ship. At the same time, it provides ship owners with a variety of options to meet different requirements. “CLEAN SKY” meets the needs of the third stage when burning LNG. The construction adopts technical measures to reduce wind resistance and reduces fuel consumption during navigation. At the same time, various energy-saving measures are provided as an alternative for shipowners, such as waste heat utilization, seawater cooling pumps using variable frequency motor drives, LNG cold energy utilization, hull plus energy-saving devices, low-resistance paints, etc., which can be selected by ship owners. Further improve the economy of the ship.
It is understood that COSCO Shipyard is currently working on dual fuel technology applied to 15k chemical/product oil tankers.
