"See through" the scientific instrument of fog barrier developed successfully in Shanghai

Professor Bao Chengzhi, an expert in pattern recognition and image processing in China, has invented a scientific instrument that helps the eye “see through” these fogs. The scientific instrument called “Real-Time Video Fog Enhancer” consists of a camera, a computer, and a monitor. It quickly judges and restores the image after the fog is blocked.

Gas mist, rain and fog, smoke, ice fog, and mist and fog... These fogs, which are common in daily life, bring a lot of inconvenience to people's traffic travel, target monitoring, rescue and disaster relief. A scientific instrument that can help the eyes “see through” these fogs has been successfully developed in Shanghai and passed the inspection of the Shanghai Institute of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Technology.

According to Professor Bao Chengzhi, a national patent inventor of this scientific instrument and a famous pattern recognition and image processing expert in China, the scientific instrument named “Real-Time Video Fog Enhancer” consists of a camera, a computer, and a monitor. With the aid of the camera, the video signal of the target image in nature is taken in real time, and high-speed parallel computing processing is performed by the computer, so that an image video signal from which the “fog barrier” has been removed can be output on the display in real time, thereby helping the eye to see the natural scene.

"The key to this science and technology lies in using computer software to imitate the neuron system of the human eye to quickly determine and restore the image after the fog. After several improvements, the speed of image processing has reached the human eye and brain system. The speed of response can process more than 30 frames of images per second, so people do not feel the time difference and can see completely synchronized images,” said Bao Chengzhi.

Bao Chengzhi graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1946 and received a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Northwestern University in 1955. He returned to China in 1956 as a researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences; vice president of the Chinese Space Science Society; and an American electrical and electronics engineer. Academics, International Pattern Recognition Society, International Neural Network Society and other senior members are well-known experts in the fields of pattern recognition and image processing, remote sensing image processing, and smart sensors in China.

Bao Chengzhi believes that the "real-time video fog enhancer" can be set up in some special fixed places, such as border guard posts, Haiphong island posts, highways, airports, ports and other traffic command monitoring sites. Through the current miniaturized development, this instrument can also be directly loaded on moving vehicles such as automobiles, trains, airplanes, ships, and subway trains.
