“Removing environmental pollution caused by ballast water”, Hitachi purification equipment verification experiment begins

Hitachi Industrial Co., Ltd. and Hitachi Industrial Equipment Technology (hereinafter, 2 companies collectively referred to as "Hitachi") have developed a ballast water purification system, and have started the verification test of the sample machine in Tokyo Bay.

Ballast water refers to the seawater that the ship loads to increase the water intake of the hull in order to ensure the safety of navigation during no-load. Since the discharge of ballast water is a destination port remote from the water intake, the microorganisms contained therein cause various environmental problems such as ecological imbalance of the discharge area. In order to solve these problems, the international convention to eliminate organisms contained in ballast water in 2004 will take effect in the near future. Hitachi's purification system was developed to meet the market demand after the entry into force of the Convention.

Hitachi said that many companies around the world are currently developing purification equipment and have entered the field of onshore verification experiments. Among them, Hitachi's equipment is different in principle from other companies' processing methods. The principle is: firstly convert the plankton, bacteria, sediment and the like with a coagulant and acidified iron into magnetic fragments (flocculation precipitates) of about 1 mm, and then collect them by using a superconducting magnet developed by Hitachi Institute of Machinery Research. Ultimately achieve the purpose of purification. This has the advantage over other companies' sterilization methods: the ballast water at the time of discharge is not toxic, the amount of residual sediment in the ballast tank is small, and the cabin corrosion rate is slow. However, the removed flocculent precipitate needs to be dried and treated as industrial waste on land.

Hitachi began on-site experiments on the Tokyo Bay Coast on September 25, 2006, and plans to assemble the equipment on the rear deck of the ship for sea trials in 2008. The equipment is scheduled to be assembled by the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki Shipyard for the construction of the LPG ship for the Ocean Shipping, and preparations for installation on such vessels are underway. The goal is to start production in 2010.

Hitachi expects that if the convention enters into force around 2012, market demand will occur around three years before its entry into force. The forecast for the market size is “to reach 1 trillion yen in the 10 years to 2016. Some companies believe that this figure will reach 10 trillion. It is difficult to accurately predict, but it is still safe to reach 1 trillion.” Hitachi, Ltd. New Business Development Division). When it comes to the market share of the target, it means: "Now the processing methods being developed by various companies are unlikely to enter the market. In the end, there will probably be a situation where one or two methods coexist. If the magnetic separation method can be accepted, it may Get more than half of the market share. But there are also possibilities for a fiasco."
